MARCELO’S MESSAGE

By M. Kupferwasser, HTBE Pres.

I would like to start my message by thanking those who have contributed with their valuable time and resources for the continuation and success of HTBE. Most of the help comes from our regular attendees on Friday nights or Saturday mornings. This is a small but mighty group of people.

With High Holidays right around the corner, if you have not purchased your tickets or membership, please do so.

The deadline for names to be included in the Yizkor book has been extended until September 7th.

I hope you will have a very enjoyable experience with us.  The Volunteer Choir is back and we have been fortunate to get help regarding the improvement of the sound system.

We are facing difficult times ahead and need to restructure our Board to face the challenges.

We need to receive nominations of people willing to serve in our Board.

We will have elections for Board members after High Holidays and have scheduled a meeting for Sunday, October 14 at noon.  We need help to set up a successful Membership meeting.

With the help of God and our members, I hope to continue with the tradition of HTBE as a thriving institution.

MernaLyn, ‘The Diet Diva’ a featured author at New York’s Book Expo will be at HTBE to discuss her new book:

THE 10 SECOND DIET;

sent to The White House to work with the First Lady’s campaign on childhood obesity.

“The word ‘diet’ refers not only to the foods we eat, but also to the life we live… ‘The 10 Second Diet’ reveals the way to reverse the obesity epidemic in adults and children, and also how to restore civility and improve humanity to our ailing society…in as little as 10 Seconds!”…MernaLyn

UPCOMING ONLINE AUCTION EVENT

Please look around your home and garage to locate items in good condition that you no longer need, such as electronics, paintings, furniture, televisions, Judaica, jewelry, name-brand purses, high-end shoes, utensils, blenders, food processors, etc.

You can make $$ on your unused or lightly used items and  HTBE will make a percentage for selling and advertising the item on the auction website.

It’s a win-win situation!

But, most importantly, we need three volunteers to assist with this event.  No volunteers, no event!  It’s that simple

COMEDY NIGHT WIN

By Barbara Moorman

Saturday night, August 25th, 26 of our congregants and friends attended the renowned Laugh Factory on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood.

Four comedians kept us laughing and entertained while we enjoyed each other’s company.

The Laugh Factory was generous to let Hollywood Temple Beth El keep all the proceeds from the ticket sales.

An amusing aside is that several of our congregants that talk incessantly during Saturday morning Shabbat services, continued doing the same at our comedy night.  That alone was entertaining and laugh-inducing. I won’t mention any names!

I’ve heard only positive responses after the event and plan to have another comedy night in the near future, as well as other fun and topical events.

Karaoke and Pizza Night coming soon. Check website for updates: HTBE.org

Reflections by Rabbi Ira

Dear Congregants and Friends,

I can hardly believe that we are already embarking on the Jewish year 5773.  August 18th was Rosh Chodesh Elul, the new Jewish month of Elul, which marks just one month before Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.  Traditionally the Shofar is sounded each weekday in the month of Elul, to remind us that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are coming soon!!  The ten days from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur are called Aseret Yemai Teshuvah, The Ten Days of Teshuvah.  So, what does teshuvah mean?  Many say teshuvah means repentance, which is an acceptable translation.  However, teshuvah, is actually rooted in the Hebrew word shuv or tashuv, which can mean to turn, return or come back, or, to answer or reply.

It seems to me that this special time of year is our chance to look back at what we have done in the past year, and how that has affected who we are now; an opportunity to look at what we have done, or refrained from doing, that we are proud of and hope to build on, as well as a chance to be honest about the things we have done, or not done, that we hope we can change in the future.  It’s a time to acknowledge all the good and positive values that we really want to embrace and emulate, as well as a season to be honest about the habits and behaviors that have taken away from these ideals.  As important, it is the time to answer the voice inside us, and declare that we are going to take action toward improving ourselves, so that we can be the best that we can be.

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Here’s your chance to ensure our future and legacy. Be a part of the HTBE 60/90 year Diamond Jubilee!!

Our 60/90 year Diamond Jubilee is coming after High Holy Days, and we hope that you will be a part of this momentous occasion. We are forming committees, setting up interest and brainstorming meetings, and encouraging everyone and anyone to add their voice, perspective, experience, skill, time, resources, muscle, etc., etc. This is going to be a huge and memorable event: Don’t miss out.

HTBE is a precious historical landmark.  Just about every Jew in Los Angeles has some connection to us; whether it is from membership, or attendance at a wedding, a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, services and/or programs.
